Not having Illinois medical insurance can be a life and death situation. While the health insurance reform bill dangles, more data supports the potential for a higher death toll among the uninsured. From developing cancer, heart disease to suffering from a traumatic injury, evidence portends that being without Illinois medical insurance is merely a fatal proposition.

In a recently published clinical trial, 1231 patients, suffering from head or neck cancers, were followed from 1998 through 2007 at the Pittsburgh Medical Center. Researchers compared the survival rate of patients, who had health insurance with the uninsured. Out of 128 subjects, who did not have health insurance or were on Medicaid, 50 percent passed away. In contrast, only 22 percent of the patients with insurance perished.

Among traumatic injury sufferers, similar death discrepancies were notable. A group of researchers of Children’s Hospital Boston and Harvard Medical School compiled statistics from the National Trauma Data Bank, which has a database of 2.7 million patients admitted to trauma centers throughout the United States. Evaluating patient admissions from 2002 and 2006, researchers reviewed 687,091 adult medical records. The findings linked a substantial correlation between the mortality rates of the uninsured patient opposed to the insured. Researchers endeavored to revise the data to delete the implications of age, race and gender; however, the statistics illustrated the same high death rate among the uninsured. Even more perturbing, Medicare subscribers’ survival rates were comparable to patients, who had a private health insurance policy.

Researchers compared the mortality rate of 29,829 patients admitted at the Department of Surgery, Division of Trauma and Critical Care, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center from 1998 to 2005. Uninsured patients accounted for 68 percent of the patients. Again, the data among the non-insured younger, less severely injured had a higher death rate than the insured counterparts.

Although hospitals initiate treatment, it is unclear whether the disparity in medical care takes place during hospitalization. Despite the lack of research evaluating the mortality rate of the uninsured to individuals with Illinois medical insurance, the Centers for Disease Control has data indicating of Illinoisans not having Illinois medical insurance has been on the rise for more than a decade.

Meanwhile, heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States. From 1996-2006,the American Heart Association noticed a 33 percent rise in cardiovascular inpatient operations. With close to 15 percent of the Illinois population not having Illinois medical insurance coupled with a high mortality rate of the uninsured, and the emerging number of cardiovascular disease diagnoses, a lack of health coverage forecasts a detrimental outcome.

Illinois medical insurance consultant, Michael Novelli asserts “Despite the fact that cancer and heart disease are not preventable, people with medical coverage are more likely to have an earlier diagnosis, allowing for better medical care. So many managed care Illinois medical insurance plans are economical enough to slow down additional medical casualties.

Cheap health insurance coverage represents a lure for the 40+ millions United States citizens living without coverage. A comprehensive analysis shows that while these Illinois health plans promise to deliver, they exclude the coverage needed to cover a medical emergency situation or even pre-authorization. In reality, the consumer pays more in the end for the outrageously, cheap health insurance quote.

During the onset of the 21st century, a series of health insurance companies scammed at least 100,000 American consumers, absconding them with $85 million worth of hospital bills. The problem with the cheap health insurance coverage myth is that by the time “policyholders” realize their medical insurance is worthless, it’s too late. It happens about the time an authorization or unforeseen hospitalization is necessary.

A sole proprietor from Elgin, Illinois, who purchased cheap health insurance coverage, had a heart attack. After a month of rehabilitation, hospital bills started piling in. To no avail, the insurance holder contacted the insurance agency for the unpaid claims. But, the illicit insurance company had long disappeared with the premiums.

Counterfeit, cheap health insurance policies are no longer a minor issue. Today, the pervasive issue is a national problem, financially crippling Americans from Illinois and the other 49 states. Whether it’s a faith based health plan (one offered at church), the dreaded disease health plan (a policy which promises to cover life threatening diseases, such as cancer, heart disease), or the discount medical card, the cheap health plan is true to its name and covers very little in the way of health care costs.

The worst scenario is when the policyholder is hospitalized or diagnosed with a chronic illness. Not only are these consumers left with mounting medical bills, but they are no longer eligible for another policy because, they are now labeled with a “pre-existing health condition,” uninsurable by many health insurance providers.

Avoiding fraud in the pursuit of obtaining Illinois health insurance is a matter of following two consumer smart strategies:

1. As due diligence is necessary, be sure to conduct your own background check, researching the health insurance company. Call the State of Illinois Attorney General’s office to confirm that the company holds a current license and does not have any reports or complaints. If your investigation determines that the health insurance company is not licensed or if the agency alleges that they are exempt from adhering to regulatory guidelines, it is an indication to continue shopping for another policy.

2. Opt for an agent with a proven track record and a reputable insurance provider. Although you may pay a little more for the policy, it exceeds the uncertainty associated with the cheap Illinois health insurance coverage.

Health insurance is a form of insurance which will cover your medical expenses when the time comes and you need them . . . and also one of the types of insurance that is also most forgot about. That is of course until it is needed. Health insurance can also include disability coverage, long term nursing and custodial care. Health insurance is offered from private insurance companies and even government sponsored programs at times. Although it may be purchased on an individual basis or group basis, such as when it is provided by companies for employees. How it works is one will pay premiums for protection against the high cost of medical expenses or unexpected healthcare expenses.

There are basically two categories when it comes to Health Insurance, the traditional and the managed care. Under these categories there are different types of plans of health insurance: the traditional indemnity plans, which are now often called fee-for-service plans; the PPO, or Preferred Provider Organizations; the POS, or Point-Of-Service plans; and the HMOs, or Health Maintenance Organizations.

The traditional indemnity plan is like auto insurance where you pay for the expenses upfront, through deductible, and then your health insurance company will take care of the rest of the bill. This has been the type of health insurance the majority of people in the past have been comfortable with. At present however, the norm is the “free for service” coverage. With this type of coverage, you can choose your hospital, your doctor and the other health care providers. However, the plan is actually something like out of pocket expense since usually there is a deductible amount before the health insurance company pays the rest of your bill. You may have to pay this up front and then have them reimburse you later. However in some cases your health care provider may also bill your health insurance directly.

The managed care health insurance has become more popular in the last decade. The majority of the people who have private health insurance also have some form managed care insurance. The managed care plans are Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs), Point-of-Service (POS) and Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs). All these basically involve an agreement between certain health care providers and the health insurance company. And the insurance companies offer financial incentives to the insured to choose their health care providers.

Aside from the typical health insurance, there is also the short term health insurance for those individuals who do not yet have the traditional and managed care insurance, such as recent college graduate or those in between jobs. The short term health insurance is flexible and may cover you for 1 to 12 months at a relatively affordable rate. Then of course there is the student health insurance for the undergraduate and graduate students.
